Katie Redding is a freelance writer currently based in Leadville, Colo. who specializes in education, environmental issues, travel, social justice and issues relevant to the intermountain West. Her freelance work has appeared, or is appearing, in publications such as San Francisco Chronicle, Terrain, The Christian Century, AOL Travel, the Colorado Independent and Aspen Home.
Katie has also spent several years as a newspaper reporter in Colorado. As a reporter for The Leadville Chronicle, she also contributed to The Summit Daily and The Vail Daily. Most recently, she was on staff at the Aspen Times, where she also wrote long-format articles, book reviews and gear reviews for the Aspen Times Weekly.
Katie Redding holds an M.A. in English from U.C. Davis, and a B.A. in English from the University of Notre Dame. She also received training as the editorial assistant to Jack Hicks, Al Young, Maxine Hong Kingston and James Houston for the Literature of California, as an editorial intern with California Wild, and a member of the editorial board for Sandra McPherson’s Swan Scythe Press.
As a graduate student, Katie won a Consortium for Women and Research Grant to pursue research on sustainable communities in Peru and Ecuador and was appointed a 2001-2, Bioregional Artist in Residence for Putah-Cache Bioregion. Her successful grant proposal to the U.S.-Mexico Fund for Culture resulted in the U.S. publication of Vuelo 294, which she co-translated.
Katie has also taught writing for many years, most notably at U.C. Davis, the Colorado Mountain College and the High Mountain Institute.
Katie has also led backpacking and winter camping expeditions, led trail crews in California and Colorado, and been a poet.
Her personal interests include long-distance trail running, gardening, knitting, cooking and shoring up her 100-year-old house.
